Weekly Message

Wow.  These snow days are beginning to make me crazy!  Here are a few reminders for the week.

This weeks sight words are list 1: she, go, this. List 2: dad, with, your.  Please practice daily.  Guided reading groups are going well and students are really learning to use these words in both reading and writing.

During letter of the day we are really working on the parts of a sentence.  Students should be beginning their sentence with a capital letter, using their "spaceman" in between their words and ending their sentence with a period.  Please review this with your child as you empty their folder each evening.

The 100th day of Kindergarten is fast approaching.  Last week you should have received a letter about the 100th day.  Please turn in your snack item as soon as possible.  The letter also explained the 100th day project.  Please make sure to read the letter so your child has what they need for our special day.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

I'm back!

I am back.  It was great to see all of your children again and these first two days have gone great!  Mrs. Stout was a fabulous sub and the kids have grown so much.  I knew they were being left in good hands but I am amazed at how much they have learned these past 3 months!

Four snow days were quite a surprise so we have some catching up to do...
I sent the homework packets home last Friday.  Your child has this week to complete two weeks of homework.  When I collect their homework packets this Friday, the first two weeks of homework should be completed.  Also, this Friday I will assess students on last week’s sight words and this week’s.  We are doing activities in class to learn both sets of words.  Last week’s words:  he and at went saw get.  This week’s words:  did up on put but mom.

Writer’s Workshop:
Students will begin writing their own “How-To” books this Thursday.  We will be studying a mentor text to learn the features of “How-To” Books.  Instead of writing narratives, students will be writing books about ‘how-to’ do something.  Students will learn to write step-by-step how to complete an activity of their choice.  Students will still have the option to write narrative stories at the writing center.

Math:
Today we reviewed the numbers 1-10.  Students are working in another “Number Galore Book”.  This book focuses on numbers 11-20.  We will be discussing whether the number is even or odd, how to model the number using ten frames and place value blocks and we will practice writing the number.

Important Dates:

Wednesday is early release.  Students will be dismissed at 1:40.  Please let me know if your child's transportation will change.

Thanks for all your support at home.  I am glad to be back!

Monday Message

Dear parents,
I hope everyone had a good weekend and a fun snow day!
Here is a look into our learning...

Sight Words:
Students did take their sight word test today over the words: the, a, can, no, what, for.  I sent their test home with them today.  I did not collect homework today.  I will check weeks 1 and 2 of December on Friday of this week.
This week’s sight words are:  we, is, my, out, big, and got

Writer’s Workshop:
Students are working on publishing one piece of writing that is special to them.  The students are editing for capitals, spaces, spelling of sight words and punctuation.  Students are also revising their work and trying to write stronger beginnings and endings.  Students are very excited about their work and look forward to sharing it with their friends when it is complete.  We will have a “Writing Celebration” next week to close our Narrative Writing Unit.  When we return from the holiday break, we will start a new unit on writing ‘How To stories’.

Letter of the Day:
We will complete our 2nd rotation of the ‘Letter of the Day’ this week.  This rotation was a short lesson on letter formation and letter sounds.  Students have become much more independent with sound spelling words.  Students are able to write their letters nicely with correct letter formation on the practice sheets I provide.  However, students need to transfer their knowledge about proper letter formation during their daily writing activities.  Please encourage your child to always use their best handwriting when they are writing.
