Monday Message

We are getting very busy around here!  Letter of the day is in full swing.  Your child should be able to recognize most letters of the alphabet. During letter of the day we will work on reviewing identification, letter sounds, and sound spelling.  If your child has difficulty identifying letters please review the letter of the day pages that come home each evening.  Your child should also be writing his/her name using only one capital letter.  We will continue to work on this daily.
On Friday we began working in centers with a learning partner. This will now be a part of our daily routine.  Students will work independently in their centers while I work with individuals or small groups.
This week we will begin writer's workshop.  We will start with some baseline assessments to show where students skills are currently .  By the end of the week students will be learning how to be writers.
Don't forget to check and empty your student's folders each evening.  This way you will not miss important information and you will have insight into your child's work at school.
Thursday evening is curriculum night.  Please make sure one parent is able to attend at 7pm in our classroom.  Thank you!

Exploring centers for the first time!

Celebration!

Thanks to everyone that helped us celebrate our first week of kindergarten. We have many new goodies to use in our classroom. We opened presents, watched a short cartoon about a new kindergartner, and enjoyed popcorn and juice. What a great way to end our first week! Thanks again!

Ready for our first full week!

The first two days were pretty successful! We spent a lot of time learning the rules and procedures of kindergarten. We also got to know each other and began building our classroom community. Please ask your child what it means to fill a bucket. You will be hearing a lot about bucket filling this year. If you are interested in this philosophy please read Have You Filled a Bucket Today. It is a great story and really helps us show good character at school and at home. This week we will begin working on letter of the day activities and math lessons with our "Numbers Galore" book. We will also start "Special Student" which is one way that we get to know each child just a little bit better. We will wrap up our fist full week with our kindergarten party. You should have picked up a gift tag during Meet the Teacher Night. Please wrap the gift item that you chose so that your child can open it for the class at our party Friday. If you did not pick up a tag please let me know and I will send one home with your child today. Don't forget next Thursday, August 29th, at 7pm is Kindergarten curriculum night. I will be giving you lots of information regarding your child's kindergarten year. Please be sure at least one parent will be able to attend. We are off to a great start and I think it will be a wonderful year!

Library

Today we visited the Sappington library for the first time. Each child will bring home one book today. Books will be due on Fridays unless we have to reschedule. Please keep your child's book in their backpack when you are not reading it. That way it will always be in their in case we go to library on a different day.

First Day Success!

We have had an excellent first day. You can expect some tired children this evening! Please look for a Sappington folder and a Character Calendar in your child's backpack. These are two things that I need you to check each night. The Character Calendar will tell you about your child's behavior each day and the Sappington folder will hold important papers. Please look through all papers each night. If there is anything that needs to be returned to me or if you need to send me a note for any reason please place it in this folder. Enjoy the pictures!
