Monday Message

Good Morning!
In Writer's Workshop we are continuing to work on "how-to" books.  The students are really enjoying these.  We are now writing longer books and even chapter books.  This week we will learn how to write introductions and conclusions for our books.
The first week of round 3 sight word tests went well.  Thanks for practicing at home.
In Guided Reading we continue to work on many reading strategies.  Ask your student how to use the following strategies when you are reading at home....

  • Stretchy the Snake
  • Eagle Eye
  • Lips the Fish
  • Chunky Monkey
Students should be able to think of ways to figure out new words when they come to them using these strategies.
In science we are now learning about living and non-living things and their needs.  Students seem to be enjoying this.

Monday Message

Good Morning,
  Looooove this beautiful weather!

Just a few reminders and updates this week....
If you are participating in the Six Flags reading club, the form is due no later than this Friday.
If you have not returned the Grandparents' Day paperwork please do so as soon as possible.
Don't forget we are starting round 3 of sight words this week.  Please help your child practice reading and writing all six words unless you have been notified otherwise.
When your child is doing homework please have them write with a pencil.  If they make a mistake they need to erase and fix it.  In the classroom we are no longer crossing out our mistakes.  We are erasing and fixing so that our work can look it's best.  Please encourage this in homework as well.
Spring conferences are coming up in just a few short weeks.  We will hold conferences in the evening of March 6.  Spring conferences are not held for all students as they were in the fall.  I will request a conference with you only if I have something that I feel we need to discuss.  You can also request a conference if there is something that you feel we should meet about.  Over the next week or so you will receive a note indicating whether or not I will be requesting a conference with you.  This will also be your opportunity to request a conference.  If you are requesting that we meet please indicate on the note what it is you would like to discuss.  Our conferences are very short (15 minutes) and your note will help me to be prepared to make the most of our time.
Thanks for your support and enjoy this weather!

Sight Words Round 3

Next week will be the last week for round two of sight words.  Round three will begin the following week.  For round three all students will be responsible for reading and writing all six words.  (unless you are otherwise notified) Today we took a pretest on reading list two.  Please look for a half sheet of paper in your child's folder so you know which words your child is struggling with.  Remember the weekly test will be on reading and writing.  The pretest only indicates what words your child can read.  Also, on the test your child will need to write a sentence using one of the sight words.  Sentences will be checked for a capital letter at the beginning, spaces between words, punctuation at the the end, and letter formation.  All students should be able to produce a proper sentence at this point in the year.  Please help your child practice sight words and sentences at home.  Thanks for your help!

Sight Words List 1.

Today you will receive a half sheet of paper with list 1 sight words on it.  I am testing everyone's ability to READ all 30 of these words today.  At this point in the year your child should be able to quickly read all of these words.  This is critical to their ability to move on in guided reading groups.  The students should also be able to correctly write most of these words but reading them is most important.  Please look for this half sheet in the folder today.  If any words are circled please help your child practice them daily.  I will check them again next Friday.  Thanks for your help at home!
